School Games 2019/2020

School Games Awards July 2020

We are delighted to receive two awards this year from the Wigan School Games Programme for our continued dedication to Physical Education and Sport.

To recognise the hard work and commitment our school has shown during the first two terms of 2019-20, we have been awarded a School Games recognition award for ongoing commitment and support of the School Games Programme.

In these unprecedented times it has been more important than ever to support and connect with our families and pupils through physical education and physical activity during their learning both at home and in school. We are therefore delighted to be recognised by the Wigan School Games Programme for our support, commitment, and engagement of a virtual physical education programme during the Summer Term 2020.

Our creativity and passion for the subject has hopefully inspired our school community to remain active during this time and in some cases we hope we have enabled families to increase their activity levels.

School Games : Year 6 Boccia at Golborne High School - January 2020

Eight children from Year 6 attended a Boccia competition at Golborne High School. Both of our teams did really well, each member showing a lot of skill and tactical thinking. Everyone enjoyed the event and showed excellent sportsmanship by not only encouraging one-another, but also by complimenting skilled members on other teams too. Team 1 narrowly missed out, by only one point, in going through to the semi-finals. Team 2 made it to the overall final, only narrowly missing out in the last game. Each member of Team 2 was awarded a silver medal. Well done to all of the children.

School Games: The Graham Jackett Cross Country - January 2020

On Saturday, over forty children from Lowton West competed in the Graham Jackett cross country competition at Leigh Harriers. This is an annual event for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 girls and boys. Again, we were blessed with a dry but very cold day which made it ideal for cross country running. All the children representing Lowton West gave their best and they must be congratulated for representing the school in such a positive and well-behaved manner. A big thank you to Mr Copley, Mrs Rimmer- Phillips, Miss Larsen, Mr. Maguire and Mrs.Higgens for looking after the children at this event.

To you the parents and carers, a huge thank you for getting your children to the sports village.

Results.

Year 3 & 4 girls’ team, Sixth place

Year 3 & 4 boys’ team, First place

Year 5 & 6 girls’ team, Third place

Year 5 & 6 boys’ team Second place

The boys’ team combined scores put them into 2nd place overall

Well done Years 3, 4, 5, and 6

Brian Cunliffe

We would like to thank Mrs Gould for organising the teams for this event.

School Games: Basketball - Thursday 21st November 2019.

Yesterday we took two very strong teams to a basketball competition at Golborne High School. Both teams (A & B) had a mix of boys and girls from Years 5 & 6. Both were amazing. They were so good that they ended up meeting each other in the semi finals where they played a high quality match that finished in a draw. This meant that the winners were to be decided by a shootout! By one basket, Team A won and progressed to the final.
There they met a very good basket-balling side from Twelve Apostles. Again, the quality was excellent and again it finished in a dreaded shootout! This one was a bit trickier. After the first, second and third round, we were still tied and both out of players. To decide the winner, one child was selected from each team for a best-out-of-three match-up. We selected Molly H who had not missed a shot all afternoon. Under pressure, she stepped up and won the shootout, the competition and the trophy. Well done to everyone who took part for a fantastic afternoon! Thank you to Mr Copley for preparing both teams to such a high standard once again.

School Games : Cross Country - Tuesday 5th November 2019.

On Tuesday afternoon, the upper juniors cross country team took part in a cross country race at Leigh Harriers. On a very wet (and VERY muddy) afternoon, the children raced against children from all over the borough in separate boys’ and girls' races. The children did really well, finishing the race tired, out of breathe and, of course, very muddy! Out of the hundreds competing, two of our children even managed to make it into the top 20! Well done to everybody. Thank you to Mr Copley for taking the children to this event.

School Games – Tag Rugby Y5/6 Mixed Boys and Girls - Wednesday 16th October 2019.

On Wednesday, we took our Tag Rugby team to Leigh Miners to take part in the School Sports Games Competition. The girls and boys played with great determination. They won three of their games in the group fixture, drew one and only conceded one try throughout the whole group stage.  We qualified for the semi - finals and showed some good sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Overall, Year 5 and 6 finished 3rd out of 16 schools! Well done to everyone involved! Thank you to Miss Olson for taking the team on this occasion.
