At Lowton West Primary School, we inspire children to become curious, knowledgeable and responsible global citizens through an engaging and progressive Geography curriculum. Geography helps pupils to understand the world around them, from their local area to distant places across the globe, and encourages them to appreciate the diversity of people, environments and cultures.
Throughout their learning, children develop their locational knowledge by exploring the world's continents, oceans, countries and significant geographical features. They build strong place knowledge by comparing and understanding a range of locations, both within the United Kingdom and around the world, recognising what makes each place unique.
Pupils investigate human and physical geography, learning about natural processes such as rivers, mountains, weather and climate, alongside the ways people shape and interact with their environments. Through these studies, children develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between people and the planet.
A key element of our curriculum is the development of geographical skills and fieldwork. Children learn to use maps, atlases, digital technologies and observational skills to gather, analyse and interpret geographical information. Regular fieldwork opportunities enable pupils to apply their learning in real-life contexts, fostering enquiry, critical thinking and a sense of place.
By weaving these geographical concepts throughout the curriculum, we equip children with the knowledge, skills and curiosity needed to understand an ever-changing world and their role within it.
