Miss Green

Welcome to our Year 5 webpage!

We hope you will find this website very useful as we will keep it up to date with class achievements, important information and key events happening with Year 5.

Year 5 Golborne Mining Disaster Talk

Year 5 were fortunate to be visited by some gentlemen who had previously worked at Golborne Colliery.

The visit was in connection to our local history research into the different mining disasters which occurred locally.

On 18th March 1979, ten men were sadly killed after an explosion at Golborne Colliery and there was only one survivor, apprentice engineer Brian Rawsthorne. Mr Rawsthorne visited school with Mr Eric Foster, who worked down the mine on the trains, to tell us all about working down the mines and what happened on this fateful day.

We also had first-hand accounts from two more gentlemen, Neil and Derek, who gave the children their personal experiences of working down the mines, too.

We were extremely lucky to be able to listen to their experiences and it really helped us to fully understand what happened.

Thank you to all our visitors for giving up their afternoon to come and speak to Year 5.

The children were extremely well behaved and respectful, and our visitors commented at the end of the afternoon about how fantastic they had been.

Well done, Year 5!
