Year 2 Routines

Dear Parents/ Carers, 

The children have settled really well into the routines in Year 2 and we are now moving rapidly ahead with our ‘catch up’ programme. Although this year is going to be very different in many ways, with regards to the current Covid situation, the overall curriculum and high expectations for your child remain the same. This letter will inform you about what some of our main focuses will be this year and how you can further support your child at home.

For all Year 2 children currently in school, we will be testing spellings each Friday from 9th October. These spellings will be available on a Friday for the test the following week. They will be available on Spelling Shed.

We will also be asking the children to learn their times tables by using Times Table Rockstars (TT Rockstars). We will test times tables every week as part of our maths lessons. 

We also have high expectations of reading and request a minimum of 3 home reads per week. Please remember to comment and sign your child’s reading record. Your child’s books will be changed every Monday and your child will be assessed on their reading level every half term. Please ensure that your child’s reading records are in school every day but their reading/library books must stay at home until book change day. 

As we encourage children to access trickier books to read, you will notice the frequent occurrence of common exception words (words which cannot be sounded out, but need to be learned and remembered). In school there will be a push towards helping children to read and learn this vocabulary and it would be beneficial for your child to continue practising these words, regularly, at home. Your child’s passwords have been stuck into the back pages of your child’s reading record for your convenience. In the event of a bubble closure or if your child is isolating, work will be made available on Seesaw.
